En los tempranos setentas, tres miembros de la banda Neoyorkina Wicked Lester decidieron darle vida a Kiss.

Paul Stanley y Gene Simmons comenzaron reclutando al baterista Peter Criss y al guitarrista Ace Frehley. Para 1973, KISS ya estaba listo. Su primer show fue en Popcorn Club en Queens, Nueva York, el 30 de enero. Pero fue meses después que decidieron cambiar su look hasta lograr el distintivo maquillaje de la banda. En su show en The Daisy en Amityville, Nueva York, el 9 y el 10 de marzo de aquél año iniciaron a experimentar con el blanco y negro en sus caras.
